Italian citizenship by descent

Italian citizenship by descent was reshaped by Law 74/2025 (in force 24 May 2025, two-generation limit upheld by the Constitutional Court on 12 March 2026). Most pre-2025 online guides are now outdated. This checker walks the current rules and tells you which route, if any, may apply to you.

Why this checker is different

Italy's descent rules changed in 2025. The two-generation limit was challenged in court, and the Constitutional Court upheld the new law on 12 March 2026. Most online guides for Italian citizenship by descent still reflect the pre-2025 unlimited-generation framework. This checker does not.

The first question is decisive: if your family filed an application on or before 27 March 2025, the old rules still apply to that application. If not, the two-generation limit applies, and the path is much narrower than most guides suggest.

What this checker will not do

It will not say you are eligible. It will say likely eligible, possibly eligible, or not eligible by descent. It will not create an attorney-client relationship. It will not promise an outcome.
